There are periods in which we seem to excel at our desired optimum capacity. We soar and so effortlessly check off box after box on the to-do list. With grace, we reach our flow state and dance through our books, pouring over intimate details bound to be on the next exam. Our schedule is robust and full of obligations. Yet, even as our heavy eyes close to finally get a night of rest, we nevertheless, feel totally fulfilled.
Times like these are no doubt splendid- but what happens when you start to fall behind on the to-do list, feel like you're racing against time, and the nights that you spend in bed seem to get shorter and shorter? You're tired, worn-out, and not enjoying what was once the smooth flow of your everyday hustle and bustle. You need to get your head back in the game. You've come to the right place.
Finding motivation around you is a great way to keep yourself up and moving. No need to wait until something negative happens in order for you to finally see the light; pick yourself up now to avoid those negative circumstances as much as you can control it.
1. Youtube Videos and TEDTalks
Lately, I've been watching a ton of "Day in the Life of a _____" videos on YouTube. The videos are bountiful and easily accessible. It used to be that you totally had to snag an internship in order to catch a glimpse into the secret world of a professional. While I 100% recommend and strongly encourage you to get one, sometimes you just can't wait until the summer rolls around before you need to quickly take a peek into a field that interests you. Having a hard time focusing on MCAT prep? Watch a Medical School/Residency Match Day Reaction vid and feel all of the emotions that you'll feel when you finally get there, too. Trying to start a business? Watch storytimes of people just like you who went through ups and downs but still managed to pull through. From past college commencements speeches to Shark Tank clips, you can find anything to get you excited about your goal again.
2. Find a new way of doing things
Sometimes, our old habits just can't keep up with our ever-transforming duties. Find new ways to achieve your goals and learn or even cope with stress and burnout. Some habits and ways of doing things are seasonal and restricted to a certain dimension of our lives. It's a great thing to adapt. Try it.
3. Think about why you do what you do
We often set goals because of ourselves and others. Are you trying to flourish and shine because you know that you were meant for something great? Do you need to stick to this career change because the salary will finally be enough to provide for the kids? Do you want to make your parents happy? Are you tired of being mediocre? The list goes on and on. For many of us, we can check off several things on that list as to why we have to keep going. Think about all these things (in a positive light, of course) and let them speak to you. "Keep going! You're almost there!", they'll say.
4. Understand why it gets hard sometimes
It's not an easy thing to have goals. Nothing good worth having will come easily. However, I always think of it like this: how you get it, is how you lose it. If it comes with hard work, good ethics, and by the grace of God, it cannot be taken away from you. If it comes overnight, it
may be just as easy to lose overnight. So, understanding why you have to put in the work can make you find joy and purpose in it, instead of it feeling like an insurmountable weight. Just keep going. You've got this!
