Proverbs 15:31 "The ear that hears the rebukes of life will abide among the wise." (NKJV)
One thing I've realized as I've matured is that I am not always right!
Funny to say, huh? Well, I'm sure it's an experience that is not too far removed from your own. I believe that at some time in our journey, there are periods in which we convince ourselves that we are totally right in everything we do. That is, we are innocent and not to be allotted blame. In our minds, we grow up in a world that is specifically tailored to our own interpretations and experiences. We do not have the mature emotional or mental capacity to understand empathy or responsibility.
Nevertheless, this is an indication of juvenility that should not remain a part of our life perspectives. As the Book of Proverbs makes us to know, it is important to take constructive correction as a useful building block of life. "The ear that hears the rebukes of life will abide among the wise." Accepting correction without feeling the need to justify your wrongdoings is the ultimate sign of maturity. Being able to hold yourself accountable for your mistakes and in turn, using the guidance you've been given to combat it and become better as a result is a major necessity. It is by no means an easy task because we are so good at sheltering our innocent images of ourselves. Yet, overcoming this natural affinity to adhere strictly to our own views is holds a valuable reward: it truly enables you to grow and thrive. Take some time to look in the mirror and truthfully study yourselves. Strengths and weaknesses alike (in a self-loving way though, of course!)
I'll post another time on what being receptive to rebuke truly looks like and what the different types of rebuke are. It can be a complex subject. Fun fact: this post was inspired by the YouVersion App's Verse of the Day! Trying something new for you guys 😊
Love you guys and thank you for reading. What do you want to see next??
